Once you understand what you’re working towards when you enroll in a phlebotomy training program, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable with your decision. Being certified in phlebotomy does not come simply from ‘completing’ a phlebotomy training program; you also need to pass the certification exam, post training. Possessing your certification proves to possible employers that you’re fully capable of performing your job and duties with as little liability as possible. In this competitive economic climate it is more important than ever to have your phlebotomy certification if you want to stand a chance against the cut throat competition.
You may be thinking that there’s only two states which require practicing phlebotomists to possess their certification in order to work so why should I worry about that? Technically it’s true that you only need certification when you’re working in Louisiana and California however, health care employers are never inclined to hire non-certified applicants over certified ones.The reason for not hiring non-certified applicants is because as a phlebotomist you are constantly working under circumstances which could risk the well being and safety of others; therefore, it’s obvious why having proof of knowing what you’re doing, is an asset to employers. In addition to learning how to properly draw blood from patients during your phlebotomy training course, you will also become highly familiar and comfortable with labeling and transportation practices.
Phlebotomists need to fully understand the techniques used to read vital signs and breathing patterns as this can be an important roll under certain circumstances. If not already, becoming familiar with computer entry, data recording and clerical work are all elements that come together to fill the day to day schedule of a practicing phlebotomist. Lastly, because you interact with so many different people whether they’re patients or co-workers, having good people skills are very helpful.
