Most of the time, the amount of knowledge dispensed over the period of the lesson is a lot, and if you are learning about it for the first time you may find yourself saturated within a very short time.
Apart from that, you should always seize any opportunities to practice what you have learnt. Since this is a practical subject, there is no short cut to being good at it, other than practicing it.
