If you’re not a phlebotomist already, I bet you think that phlebotomy jobs require you to maybe just prick veins and handle blood, right? Well, that’s true, but there are other qualifications that you will need to have whether you’re looking at phlebotomy jobs in CA, or phlebotomy jobs in NC or in any other city for that matter. They are actually requirements that you will need to get into phlebotomy work, so if you’re looking for phlebotomy training, these are things that your training (personal or otherwise) must meet.
- Familiarity with State and Federal Regulations
These are a must. You must learn them even if they are not taught to you in class. If you don’t know the federal and state rules, medical institutions will be afraid to touch you because you could land them a lawsuit simply because you did something without knowing that it was the wrong thing to do. Remember that phlebotomy jobs require you to deal with people who are sick as well as blood, and a single error of even misjudgment can go as far as causing the loss of a life. Different states may have different rules, so find out what yours are. Then check what the FDA approved Standard Operating Procedure Manual, EMEA, OSHA and CLIA require you to know.
- Your Hospital Policies
This, again, is critical. All hospitals have operation procedures and manuals. If you learn what you’re supposed to do, you will save yourself a tarnished career, a lawsuit or you may save your hospital a lawsuit too. At best, you can save a life. Phlebotomy jobs may not require you to know these before you join the particular institution that wants to hire you, but during your induction period, make sure you drill them into your mind and that you get yourself a copy so that you can refer should you ever need them.
- Physical Fitness/Strength
Odd considering that you’re drawing millimeters of blood and putting it into little vials, right? Well, not so odd according to many phlebotomy jobs because they require that you should be able to lift or at least lug 50 pounds at once. Sometimes, a patient may need to be carried onto a stretcher and it may happen in your lab. If you can’t lift reasonably heavy weights, it means that time is wasted looking for someone else to help.
- You must be able to stand for up to 4 hours at a time
There are people who cannot stand for long periods and if you can’t, then phlebotomy jobs may be the wrong ones for you. You will spend a lot of time on your feet. You’re constantly receiving people and drawing samples and moving them from here to there and so on. If you have a problem with being on your feet, this will be hard for you. If you have leg problems or weight issues, think about what you can do to make sure that they go away.
