The role of the phlebotomy technician is one of the most important roles in a medical environment. They work with highly trained and specialized medical practitioners, so it’s somewhat easy for them to streamline the medical services given to the patients. In other words, the responsibilities of the phlebotomist will extend farther than just collecting blood samples from patients. Depending on the job, the patients and the people they are working with, the phlebotomist may be tasked to collect urine samples and fecal samples of patients, which are to be used for laboratory testing.
The technician needs to be prepared to handle different settings, even the stressful ones. It can easily become complicated, regardless of how simple it all started if the phlebotomist lacks the required knowledge and training. This is the goal that medical institutions and specialty schools are trying to achieve.
The medical facility can turn into chaos in an instant, so the technicians will need to be able to deal with patients with all kinds of temporary emotional dispositions. Patients who are too afraid, too panicked, too stressed or too emotional can be very difficult to handle. It all boils down to the patient management skills of the phlebotomist, which will have been learned in phlebotomy training.
Having said all that, it’s evident that the quality of training every technician receives is pivotal to his efficiency as a medical practitioner. The key is to find the best medical facility with the highest possible quality of education to offer. The price will have to be included in the equation for students who are trying to make ends meet, but, for the most part, the cost shouldn’t be a problem because the training is not going to take very long anyway.
The requirements for becoming a phlebotomist will vary by state. In some places you will be able to apply to a medical facility with minimal training. In other places, you will have to be a certified phlebotomist first. The training programs available don’t all come with a certification at the end. In some areas the students will only take the training as a form of introductory course for a higher medical degree. In places like this, the student looking to find a long-term career in phlebotomy has to take a certification examination.
Some states impose less specific requirements, which could be seen as a good thing. Individuals in these states can become phlebotomy techs with only a few days of orientation, but they do have to undergo certain tests. Tests like a hazardous chemical exposure test will detect whether or not the person is suitable for working at a medical facility.
Educational background and paper requirements also vary by state. For example, a high school diploma is required for individuals living and hoping to find work in California. Alternatively, a GED will do as a qualification for a student to enroll for a phlebotomy training program. These are, of course, subject to the 2003 adopted regulations of California pertaining to phlebotomy practices within the state.
