The truth is that besides schooling, it is also really important to obtain certification, especially if you are just starting your career. The Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that most employers have specific certification requirements when they want to fill a vacant job.

The good news is that there are many different organizations that are reputable and that specialize in offering professional phlebotomists the chance to show that they are qualified to perform the job. The only problem is that the applicant needs to go through different exams and needs to fit certain criteria. Most of the organizations will help you when you apply for phlebotomy jobs and you need to prove that you are certified. Below you will find a list of the associations that you need to go through in order to obtain the needed certification.

NPA – National Phlebotomy Association

This is definitely a preeminent organization in the country and the truth is that the certification offered by NPA improves the chances of obtaining phlebotomy jobs. There is absolutely no online certification system offered but they issue a special card that attests your status with the association. You can obtain replacement cards whenever they are needed from the website at a cost of just 15 dollars.

NCCT National Center for Competency Testing

NCCT offers certification that is helpful in obtaining phlebotomy jobs only if you have completed phlebotomist education in the previous 10 years. If the education was completed in the previous 6 months, you will pay less for the examination. The employer will verify the certificate by checking your specially issued NCCT ID number and the social security number.

ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology

ASCP offers a very good verification service that the employer can check. All that needs to be done is check for identification and the entire process can be handled quite quickly. The certification offered by the American Society for Clinical pathology is the oldest that is present in the country and in order to obtain it, you need to have finished high school and completed the appropriate medical education. If the conditions are met, you will need to go through a lengthy and tough exam.

ASPT American Society for Phlebotomy Technicians

ASPT will welcome all specialists, even if they are members of a different organization. However, they do require you to choose unique categories for certification. This includes drug collection specialist, arterial blood gas, paramedical insurance examiner, point of care technician and EKG technician. An online searchable database is offered for the employer to check for certification.

AMT – American Medical Technologists

AMT certification stands out as unique due to the fact that it offers international recognition. This makes it really desirable among those looking for phlebotomy jobs. The only thing required to take an exam is the diploma that shows you have completed your phlebotomy education. AMT has a website that features all phlebotomists that are certified; although there is a need that the employer holds an ID in order to perform the search.

If you are considering attending phlebotomy classes in Hartford you should be aware of the fact that there are different schools that you can go to. Two of them are extremely popular and recommended by most professionals. They are the Goodwin College and the Hartford Hospital School of Allied Health. Programs offered will cover the basic aspects of phlebotomy and the quality of the phlebotomy classes is similar. The difference stands in the approach when referring to further studies. Graduates are going to be properly prepared for a phlebotomy certification exam.

Phlebotomy classes from Goodwin College

Goodwin College currently offers a certificate program in the field of phlebotomy through a 16-credit system. The students that are going to earn the certificate will have an advantage in finding a suitable job. In addition, it is possible to continue studies at the college to obtain a bachelors degree, which will bring in even more chances of a good job in the future. The offered phlebotomy training program will focus on different practical elements and includes a special internship requirement that is necessary in order to complete schooling.

During the training to obtain the certification, students will have to take introductory phlebotomy classes that focus on all lab work technical elements, anatomy and scientific terminology. As introductory classes are finished, the students will move towards classes that focus on actual practice and different graduated techniques linked to collecting blood samples properly. Internship is the final phlebotomy class and this is where all students will have to prove that they can apply what they have learned in the previous classes.

Phlebotomy classes from Hartford Hospitals School of Allied Health

The phlebotomy classes offered are available at different times of the year and are tailored to prepare students for a national phlebotomist certification exam. The program is accredited and it includes a 15 weeks course that includes lab and lecture components.

Phlebotomy classes focus a lot on lab work and will go well beyond the field of phlebotomy. Students also learn about electrocardiograms and patients vital signs. This basically offers a head start that is great for related medical field certification. Standard medical terms and industry knowledge is combined with venipuncture practical understanding and anatomy. There is also a theoretical side that is covered and students will be properly prepared to reach their education goals.

Online phlebotomy classes

Besides the two phlebotomy courses that were mentioned above, it is also recommended for some students to consider the possibility of enrolling in online phlebotomy classes. This is suitable for those that do not have the time required to attend regular classes in Hartford. At the moment there are different online colleges that offer really good programs for students, but it is highly important that you only enroll in one of those that have been accredited. If you do this you are guaranteed that the programs offered are of a really high quality in educational and teaching terms and they will properly prepare you for the essential national exam.

Granted, following the 5 to 7 week course will not reveal any secrets of the modern medicine but rather the basic knowledge required for the low-end part of the job. On the other hand, doctorate or masters degree level phlebotomy classes and keeping up to date with the newest medical journals can really broaden a students horizon and prepare them for high responsibility work. The following article will list a few of the recent discoveries that have captured the interest of specialized phlebotomists worldwide.

Early discovery of Parkinsons disease through phlebotomy

Up to now there were few methods to determine whether a patient was suffering from Parkinsons diseases, save for the manifestation of the symptoms. However, a study conducted by a few phlebotomy researchers in the United Kingdom has uncovered some amazing results. To put it simply, a blood sample and a few simple tests can be used to diagnose the patient and verify whether he is suffering from this debilitating condition.

Researchers were looking in the blood sample for a substance named phosphorylated alpha synuclein and the study indicated that patients with Parkinsons syndrome present a substantially higher amount of this. Moreover, the increasing amount of phosphorylated alpha synuclein is there even before the decaying of the brain tissue has begun.

Health hazards for smokers measured by phlebotomists

It is safe to say that the study regarding the level of health hazards presented by smoking has not yet been perfected to pinpoint accuracy. However, the prognosis is good and phlebotomist researchers are expecting a breakthrough very soon. The research revealed a connection between the buildup of hazardous substances in the patients aorta and the SP-B protein. In essence, the higher the SP-B levels, the more chances of developing a circulatory or heart condition.

This may not seem like a major discovery, given that medical specialists already knew smoking has a negative effect on the circulatory system. Nevertheless, no tests so far even came close to measuring exactly how much the organism of the smoker has been affected. Therefore, this study presents more importance to the medical community than anyone may be lead to believe.

In closing: Arguments for continuing phlebotomy education

In the modern world, new forms of illnesses, viruses, infections or bacteria are discovered on a daily basis, even before researchers have been able to find effective cures for the ones that have existed for years. Therefore, the need for the expertise of a specialized phlebotomist with an up-to-date education and knowledge regarding the latest developments of the community becomes increasingly essential. It has been argued that a medical education is only required by a few states in order to practice phlebotomy. On the other hand, non-specialized and non-certified personnel rarely have the opportunity of ascending in the hierarchy of hospital or clinics and they are generally stuck in a dead-end job collecting specimens until completion of the proper education.

It is one thing to have a certificate in phlebotomy, and another to be experienced in the field. Both are important in one way or another, but there is a demand for well-trained individuals in the healthcare sector. Many states are already insisting that whether or not the staff member in their hospitals are well experienced in the phlebotomy field, they are to show certification of the same if they are to continue in their employment. Such states as California and Louisiana are already enforcing this policy, so that they will have workers that are competent enough to work in the laboratory fields and the clinics that are in the state.

There are two kinds of certificate courses that are given in the United States. Students who have already received training in the field through different institutions have their own separate kind of certificate to earn. The second kind of certificate will be issued for those people who have practiced as phlebotomists. The institutions that are responsible for issuing these certificates include the American Society for Clinical Pathologists and the National Phlebotomy Association.

High school graduates with diplomas are qualified as freshmen in the field. They will be required to attend 40 hours of class theory study, and 120 hours of practical training as practice. They also need to provide proof of 100 collections of blood as individuals. If the student has trained in one of the many accredited institutions, then he will be allowed to proceed. In all, the student will need to have documentation from the accredited institution that he has undertaken the 100 successful procedures himself and he/she also needs to be a member of the APT. He will also need to prove that he has conducted five skin incisions successfully.

As for practicing phlebotomists, the National Phlebotomy Association insists that they sit for 160 hours of theory class, and provide proof of internship at a health institution. Another option that may be good enough for students that are far away is the online certification. Acquiring phlebotomy certification online requires that the student receive some training from an accredited institution, and have some hands-on training in the field as well.

The training course will generally give the student some knowledge about the human anatomy, the physiological aspects that a study of phlebotomy may entail, and the different venipuncture skills and techniques that are necessary for a phlebotomy practitioner in the field. In addition, there are some administrative aspects of the field that an individual will be trained in, including book keeping, computer skills and how to treat patients.

After receiving the certificate, the students who have not received any training apart from that given by the institutes are advised to practice more on their own. They can get more of this kind of practice in various health facilities, including hospitals and clinics. The future for a certified phlebotomist is quite bright since most health facilities pay a good amount for experienced phlebotomists. Nevertheless, you should settle down in this career and gain as much experience as possible before your salary can rise.

The common belief of patients who visit hospitals and clinics to have their blood taken is that all the personnel in charge of the blood drawing operation has one form or another of phlebotomy certification. It rarely occurs to the unsuspecting individual that he should ask for credentials on the phlebotomy certification from the person puncturing his vein and withdrawing the sample, mainly due to the misconception that nothing can go wrong. Is that always the case? Not in the opinion of several reputable veterans in the phlebotomy field, among which we can count Dennis Ernst. Taking blood samples in an improper manner can lead to disastrous results, which will be reviewed as follows.

Injuries and broken vessels

However, this guide would like to point out that nutritional supplements cannot be taken randomly and especially without undergoing a physical exam and talking with a doctor. The reason for this is that certain individuals suffer from a genetic mutation that permits an excessive intake of iron, which in time can lead to hemochromatosis. The bottom line is that iron or other nutritional supplements must be taken only with the doctors recommendation. In addition, while taking the supplements, patients must constantly visit the physician to monitor the levels of hemoglobin and iron present in the blood.

Early symptoms of hemochromatosis

Despite the fact that there is no set of distinct signs of iron overdose, a few symptoms can help people acknowledge they may have a problem and present to the doctors office. In general, the early signs that should be taken seriously include:

Chronic fatigue and overall weakness

Constant joint and abdominal pain

Unusual weight loss

If neglected, these symptoms will, in time, lead to serious complications such as heart failure, liver cancer, cirrhosis, diabetes, arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, arthritis, glucose intolerance, hypopituitarism, etc.

The importance of the expertise of a phlebotomy specialist

It is important to note that excessive iron in the blood and body are not often revealed during routine medical exams. However, if there is a reason to suspect the patient might have this condition, then the doctor will work closely with a phlebotomy specialist and perform several tests, such as the elevated serum iron, the elevated ferritin, the elevated transferrin saturation or the TIBC test. In general, having a family member diagnosed with hemochromatosis significantly increases the chances of other family members developing the condition. Consequently, even though at the time of the medical exams the levels of iron in the blood are normal, regular visits to the doctors office for regular checkups are essential, as this can quickly change.

The typical hemochromatosis treatment options

The most common treatment option most patients select is therapeutic phlebotomy. As the name of the therapy suggests, the technique consists of removing blood over-saturated with iron from the patients system and, therefore, preventing further damage to the organs and tissues. Patients diagnosed with high levels of iron will need to see a phlebotomist in order to remove a whole unit of blood, once or twice per week. The duration of the treatment varies depending on the excessive iron found present in the body and the therapy stops immediately after the iron levels become normal.

However, in order to maintain the levels of the nutrient within normal parameters, patients will need to repeat the therapeutic phlebotomy procedure three or four times per year. Overall, the technique shows vastly positive results, given that patients who have already suffered damage to tissues and organs are expected to have a normal life afterwards.

Students who are new to the field of phlebotomy often encounter this problem. Lost, with no one to turn to, they make random decisions based on what they think they know–not necessarily what they need to know. This article will contrast the aspects that most students of phlebotomy ask out of want and ask out of need. As you will soon learn, distinguishing between the two major categories of information about a medical career is essential to your future success in the said career.

If you start with the things you want to get out of this career, you will end up with a nearly endless list of things. Among the highest entries on the list is the phlebotomist salary. It’s a solid fact that a phlebotomist makes a good deal of money these days. The misconception is that they make a good deal of money from a job that is so easy anyone can do it. That’s utter misinformation. The phlebotomist salary may be high, but it does come with certain non-selling aspects to create a balance.

What you really want right now is a number. A five-digit, hopefully six-digit number preceded by the dollar sign. It is encouraging to know the actual amounts of the median and high-earner salary of phlebotomists these days, but keep in mind, too, that numbers tend to distract people. For example, hearing that a phlebotomist salary can be as much as $38,950 per annum, creates a very desirable misconception that this is the median salary. However, that is the highest salary for high-earners in the field of phlebotomy. To approach the phlebotomist salary in a need-to-know basis, keep in mind that you have to look for the median salary.

To find the median salary, you simply compare the entry-level salary and the income of the highest earners. For an entry-level phlebotomist, which is what you will be for the first-half of your entire career, the salary can only reach up to $17,230. That puts the median salary somewhere around $28,000. You do the math if you want a more accurate result.

Take note too that these amounts may be outdated with every passing week. Always look for the most recent statistics when comparing median salaries. Doing so will aid you in your quest to find a successful career as a phlebotomist.

The same troubling issue applies to people engaging in a new field of specialization. Whether it is a switch in the medical career or a first-time attempt at medical school, it is always hard in the beginning. People do say that it gets easier through time, but that may not be reassuring enough for you. It’s your career after all and you are the one who will have to live with it for a very long time. It is important to take a careful and systematic decision process before you engage in a medical career.
